Sage Parashurama stormed into the hall and shouted, “king Janaka, tell me who has dared to break Lord Shiva’s bow?’
King Janaka could not utter even a word. At that moment, Rama got up and with folded hands he addressed the sage, “O great sage! It is I, a humble servant of yours who has broken this bow. Please tell me how I may I serve you.”
“Ha! My servant!” Sage Parashurama exclaimed in anger. “One who has broken the bow of lord shiva is my enemy. Who are you?”
“I am Rama, son of King Dashratha,” Rama replied.
‘Rama, if want to prove your strength, then takes this bow gifted to me by Lord Vishnu and strings it. Only Lord Vishnu can string this bow. If you fail, you will have to battle with me.”
Rama respectfully took the bow from sage Parashurama’s hands. He easily strung the mighty bow of Lord Vishnu, for him himself was none other than an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He had come to earth to destroy the false pride of the people like Sage Parashurama. Then Rama took out an arrow from his quiver and aiming at Sage Parashurama, said, “Tell me, O great sage, what should I destroy-your ascentic power or your power of locomotion?”
Sage Parashurama realized that Rama was none other than the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He bowed before him and said, “Take all my ascentic powers, but let me go in safety to Mahendra mountain before sunset.” Rama let Sage Parashurama go to Mahindra Mountain.
