Sage Valmiki
This is the tale of the Treta yug. A robber named Ratnakar used to live in a forest. He would rob and kill the travelers who go across the forest. He had become a menace for the kingdom. One day, he was sitting in the forest when he saw Sage Narada roaming in the forest. He became very angry and went to him. Then he shouted at him, “How dare you are roaming so freely in this forest? Aren’t u afraid of me? Give me all that you have, or else I will kill you.”
Sage Narada said in a clam voice,”Why are you talking so rudely? Why do want to kill me? What have I done to you? Don’t you know that all yours sins are clearing your way to the hell?” “I am doing all this only to feed my family. I don’t think I am doing anything wrong,” replied the robber. At this, Saga Narada asked the robber, “Are you sure that your family members are willing partners in the sins you are committing?” I think that you should go home and ask your family this question,”Saga Narada continued. The robber tied Sage Narada to a tree. After that, he went to his home and asked that question to his parents. To which they answered, “No, we are not the partners in your sins. We never asked you to commit sins only to feed us.” The robber was shocked to here such answer from his parents. Then, he asked the same question to his wife and children and he got the same reply like his parents. The robber became thoughtful, “Am I doing all this for those who don’t even want to share the burden of guilt or punishment with me?”
At once he returned to the forest and untied Sage Narada. He folded his hands in front of him and said, “Lord, please guide me. I don’t want to lead a life of a robber anymore.” Sage Narada embraced the robber and said, “Do as I say and you will attain the peace of mind. Always chants the name of lord Rama.” After saying so, Sage Narada disappeared from there.
The robber sat down under a tree and started chanting the name of Lord Rama. He kept on meditating for years together. The ants built anthills all over him. This robber came to be known as the great Sage Valmiki. He composed one of all times, ‘THE RAMAYAN’, which tells about the life of Lord Rama.
